A working question bank for interviewing AI Content Strategists in 2026. Pick four to six questions per round; the signal is in the follow-ups, not the first answer.

A note on what to listen for, generally: strong candidates speak in shipped work and named tradeoffs. They tell you which model, which dataset, what failed, what they'd do differently. The vague answers — "we used AI to scale content production" — almost always mean prototype-stage experience.

Round 1: Recruiter or hiring-manager screen, 30 minutes

The goal is to confirm the candidate has done the work, not just observed it.

  1. Walk me through one AI-assisted content program you've shipped end-to-end. What was the goal, the system, and the outcome?
  2. What's a piece of content or workflow you'd point to as your best work in the last 12 months, and why?
  3. How would you describe the difference between a content strategist and an AI content strategist to someone outside marketing?
  4. Which AI tools and models are part of your daily workflow today, and how have those choices changed over the past year?
  5. What's the biggest mistake you see content teams make when they introduce AI?
  6. What kind of editorial environment brings out your best work?
  7. Why this role, why now, and what does success look like for you in the first 90 days?

What you're listening for: specific systems and outcomes, honest tradeoffs, healthy skepticism, a clear distinction between writing and strategy.

What to flag: tool name-dropping with no outcomes, framing AI as either magic or threat, fuzzy metrics.

Round 2: Craft and judgment, 60 minutes, live

This is the round that matters most. Mix discussion with two short exercises.

Discussion (30 minutes)

  1. Describe the prompt library, voice guide, or AI editorial system you're proudest of. How did you version it, and how did you measure whether it was working?
  2. Tell me about a time an AI-generated piece of content failed in production — hallucination, off-brand voice, plagiarism, factual error. How did you find out, and what did you change?
  3. We have to choose between three approaches for a recurring blog series: a fine-tuned model on past content, RAG over the knowledge base, or a strong base model with a careful prompt and human edit. How do you decide?
  4. How do you think about AI-assisted content and SEO in 2026, including answer engines and AI overviews?
  5. A senior editor pushes back on AI-assisted drafting because "everything sounds the same." What's your response, and what do you actually do about it?
  6. Walk me through the human-in-the-loop review process you'd build for a team shipping 60 pieces of content a month.
  7. How do you prevent brand voice drift over time as models, team members, and prompts all change?

Exercise A: Draft rewrite (15 minutes)

Hand them a 200–300 word AI-generated draft that's flat, slightly off-brand, and contains one factual error. Ask them to:

  • Identify what's wrong (voice, structure, factual issue, anything else).
  • Rewrite the opening 100 words.
  • Describe what they'd change in the prompt to prevent these issues next time.

Strong signal: confident editorial moves, named voice attributes, prompt iteration that goes beyond surface tweaks, recognition of the factual error without prompting.

Exercise B: Prompt iteration (15 minutes)

Give them a real-ish brief: "We need a 600-word landing page intro for a new product feature. Audience: mid-market marketers. Tone: confident, useful, not hypey." Ask them to:

  • Draft a v1 prompt out loud.
  • Run it (or describe what they'd expect from a leading model).
  • Iterate to v2 with explicit reasoning.
  • Talk through what they'd evaluate to know v2 is better than v1.

Strong signal: structured prompts (role, context, constraints, examples, output format), explicit voice constraints, real evaluation thinking, willingness to question the brief.

Round 3: Take-home or paid trial

Pay for it. Cap at 4 to 6 hours. Pick one of these:

Voice guide and prompt library starter. Given three sample pieces of existing content, draft a one-page brand voice system and three prompts (long-form blog, lifecycle email, social post) that produce on-brand drafts. Annotate the reasoning.

Workflow design. Design the human-in-the-loop content workflow for a team shipping a mix of blog, email, and social with a small editorial staff and one in-house writer. Deliver a one-page diagram and a one-page rationale.

Quality rubric and evaluation plan. Propose a quality rubric for AI-assisted blog content. Score three sample pieces (provided). Recommend what would have to change in the process for the worst piece to score as well as the best.

Strategy memo. Given an overview of content goals and team, write a two-page memo describing the AI-assisted content program you'd build in the first six months, including risks and mitigations.

Score on: clarity of thinking, editorial taste, system design, honesty about tradeoffs, and how cleanly the deliverable could be handed to a real team.

Round 4: Cross-functional panel, 45 minutes

Bring in editorial, SEO, brand, and one product or engineering partner. The point is to see how the candidate translates across functions.

  1. (Editorial) Tell me about a time you disagreed with an editor about an AI-assisted piece. How did you resolve it?
  2. (SEO) How do you think about content uniqueness, programmatic SEO, and AI search visibility, and where do they conflict?
  3. (Brand) How do you keep AI-generated content from making the brand sound like everyone else?
  4. (Legal / risk) What's your process for catching hallucinations, plagiarism, and IP exposure before publish?
  5. (Product / eng) Have you worked with engineers to integrate AI into a content pipeline? Walk me through it.
  6. (Operations) When does AI not belong in the workflow at all?

Strong signal: language that adapts to each interviewer, specific examples, an instinct to collaborate rather than dictate.

Round 5: Leadership and vision, 30–45 minutes

Senior leader — head of marketing or head of content.

  1. Where do you think AI-assisted content is going in the next 12 to 24 months, and how should a team like ours prepare?
  2. What would you change about our current content program in the first quarter? (Send three recent pieces in advance.)
  3. How do you measure the ROI of an AI Content Strategist over a 12-month horizon?
  4. What's an opinion you hold about AI in content that most of your peers would disagree with?
  5. What do you need from leadership to do your best work?
  6. What scares you about this role?

Strong signal: strategic clarity, an actual point of view, willingness to disagree, self-awareness about what they need.

How to score

Score each round 1–5 across these dimensions. Use the same rubric for every candidate or you'll lose comparability.

Be ready for their questions

The strong candidates will interview you back. Have crisp answers ready:

  • What's the current AI tooling stack and budget for the role?
  • How does editorial sit relative to brand, product marketing, and SEO?
  • What's leadership's appetite for risk on AI-assisted content?
  • How is the role measured at six months? At twelve?
  • How autonomous is the role on tool selection, vendor choices, and process?
  • How does the team handle disclosure, attribution, and IP?

If you can't answer most of these, you're probably not ready to open the role. Senior candidates will read silence here as a signal.
